How can service robots walk and live alongside humans?

2025.03.21

When we talk about service robots, many people wonder if they can truly integrate into our daily lives. To achieve this, safety is the primary concern. The prominent issues currently are:

  1. Bipedal robots have weak static balance, and when power is lost or a malfunction occurs, the dynamic balance system fails. Can you imagine the consequences if a fast-moving bipedal robot, weighing dozens of kilograms and over 1.5 meters tall, falls?

  2. Most of today's bipedal robots have exteriors made of metal or other high-strength materials, which are rigid and generate significant kinetic energy while moving. If the robot makes contact with a human without promptly sensing and taking appropriate action, it can easily cause injury.

  3. Current artificial intelligence cannot guarantee the accuracy of decisions every time. To prevent service robots from causing personal injuries or property damage due to erroneous actions, it is crucial to add various active and passive protective systems.

ADW's "electronic skin" technology was developed precisely to address this issue. This technology endows robots with human-like tactile perception, which consists of surface sensations such as touch, pressure, temperature, sliding, and impact, as well as the perception of being struck deep within the "bones" that support the skin. This enables robots to perceive their surroundings and the objects they come into contact with in real-time. Through this technology, robots can adjust their movements when interacting with humans, preventing excessive collisions that could cause injury.

Only service robots equipped with "electronic skin" can safely interact and move within typical household environments, including spaces shared with family members such as the elderly and young children. These robots can coexist with humans to perform tasks like cleaning and organizing. Their advanced perception capabilities ensure safety during interactions, effectively preventing accidental harm to household members.

With continuous technological advancements, we have every reason to believe that robots will achieve even greater breakthroughs in safety, perception, and decision-making accuracy. ADW's sensing technology will continue to play a crucial role, helping us realize the beautiful vision of harmonious coexistence between robots and humans.
